Installation
- Install DoD root certificates
- Install ActivClient middleware (DoD root certificates and ActivClient can be easily installed together)
- Check the ActivClient and certificates on the CAC
- Two methods to support CAC for Thunderbird
Step 1: Install the plugin for ActivClient CD.
Step 2: Unload the default CAC Security Device from the Account Settings in Thuderbird
Method 1
- Install the Firefox and Thunderbird plugin from an ActivClient CD:
- Start >> settings >> control panel >> Add or Remove Programs
- Select ActivClient x86 then click “change” click Next
- Then select modify
- Select Firefox and Thunderbird support and select “This feature will be installed on local hard drive”
Method 2
Account Settings >> Security >> Security Devices
Select the “CAC Card” device generated by the installation of the ActivClien
Account Settings >> Security >> Security Devices
Once the “CAC Card” device is unloaded, click on the “Load” button
Account Settings >> Security >> Security Devices
Select “acpkcs201‐en6.dll” and click “Open.”

Digital Signing and Encryption
You may select “Digitally sign messages (by default)” so every outgoing email will be Signed. Default Encryption for all outgoing email (default) is not recommended.
Account Settings >> Security >> Security Devices
Click “OK” to get back to Thunderbird email panel
